When feeding your dog it's just a simple process of filling the food and water bowls and setting them back on the floor, right? Nothing too difficult, since dogs dont require anything fancy. Well believe it or not, numerous veterinarians would disagree with that statement. Even though there are a lot of pet owners who do feed their dogs this way, using an elevated feeder is really better for your dog for many reasons. At first it might not seem like an important difference, but the health issues that can be easily resolved through the use of an elevated dog feeder are numerous. If you take a second to think about it, the idea of eating and drinking with your neck and back bent doesnt seem very comfortable or enjoyable does it? For an older dog particularly, an elevated feeder is significant to their health. Like all mammals, even people, older dogs usually eat less anyway. Add to that the discomfort of eating from the floor and the potential that your pet isn't getting proper nutrition increases. It's necessary for older dogs to be as comfortable as possible to remain healthy and get the fuel they really need. The same theory is applicable to dogs that have arthritis or joint problems. A dog feeders is an a great technique to use to ensure the appropriate nutrition of a senior or ailing animal. Lets keep in mind general housekeeping for a second. Pet dishes sitting on the ground soon turn into a breeding ground for germs and mold. The moisture from the water your dog drips when he raises up his head to swallow collects below the dishes and makes the perfect environment for dangerous little pests to grow. This isnt safe for the dog or the people in the home. When dogs drink from an elevated feeder it isn't required of them to lift their heads in order to swallow and all the water that escapes tends to fall back into the bowl rather than onto the ground. An elevated feeder will go far in eliminating this likely health hazard to the entire family. Another benefit to using an elevated feeder is gas. Feel free to giggle, but there isnt a single dog owner alive who hasnt dealt with their dogs occasional periods of noxious gas. If you need another reason to switch to a dog feeders this is it. An elevated feeder makes it so the dog can hold their head at a more natural angle while they eat. What this means for you is that your dog gulps less, reducing air intake into the stomach and thus eliminates less odoriferous air into your breathing air. Of course your dog also feels much better without having the constant bloated feeling that comes from having gas - turns out to be a definite win-win situation for both of you. On a more serious note, eating directly from the ground is really unhealthy for the four-legged member of the family. Some dogs are hindered by a condition called megaesophagus. This is a condition in which the muscles of the esophagus become loose and too large. Eating from the floor forces the affected pet to work against gravity with faulty equipment. Since the esophagus is weak to start with, food will often get stuck there instead of continuing to stomach. An elevated feeder reduces the work the muscles have to do and aids gravity in getting the food to the stomach, where it needs to be. There are plenty of specific reasons to spoil and take care of your pet. Most importantly, the day you brought him into your house; you basically made a promise to take care of him as best as you could. Providing your dog with the proper materials to help ensure lasting health is just part of doing your job. |
